dan^;literb and their niarriage:3 are stated by IMrs. Gumming Bruce in her recent
work, "The iJruees and the Cuiavns." A question has often been raised
as to the birthplace of King Kobert the Jhuce. Suniewiiters contend for
Lochnial'cn Castle. Ihit as his father and mother lived at the castle of Turn-
l)ery in Carrick, where the Coiuitess's numerous fanjily of sons and daughters
appear to have been born, the probability is that the king was also born there.
A charter was granted by the seventh Lord of Annandale, also under
the title of li'ohert Bruce, Enil of Carrick and Lord of Annandale, to Sir
"William of Carlyle, knight, of a piece of land for the increase of the land
of Kyucnuind, whicli is minutely described,
Another TLdiarter was gianted by " liobertus de Bruys, comes de Carrik,
el dominui A'allis Anaiulie," to Alexander de Ivethe, of the granter'.s teiumient
in Langforgnmd. The charter bears no date. The granter's seal is still
appended and entire. The shield bears the Bruce saltire and a chief. These
were the armorial bearings of the Bruccs before the inariiage with the
Countess of Cairick. Bruce took tbe nanje and stjde of Larl of Cai;-ick;
but he continued to carry his own arms without any addition or impidiiig
tliose of his wife. The legend reads " S. lioberti de Brvs." ^ This cliarter has
been lithogra))htd for this work and is here introduced. ]t is printed at
length in the Appendix along with a translation. The handv, liting is a very
favourable specime.i of a charter of tlie lliirtcenth centuiy.
The eighth Bruce of A)iiiandale was the most reiiowued and illustrious
of tliem all, the lieio of Banuockburn, raibcil the First, King of Scotland; and
