This chief of the Johiistoucs having been iii possession of the Johnstone<br />

estates for tlie long period of forty-five years, acquired more landed property<br />

and dignities in the peerage of <strong>Scotland</strong> than any of his predecessors. As<br />

the Lead of a great Border clan, and as a loyalist under King James the<br />

Sixth and King Charles the First in the tronlJous times of the Covenant and<br />

the Connnouvvealtli of Cromwell, the memoirs of his life and actions will<br />

require some detail. Lut it is not proposed to enter at large on the con-<br />

tentious questions connected with the covenanting period unless in so far as<br />

this cliief was directly concerned in them.<br />

James Johnstcue \va3 born in 1G02. His succession to the Johnstone<br />

estates in ICOS was in very unfavourable circumstances: he was tlieu only<br />

six years of age, and owing to the untimely death of his father little or<br />

no provision had been made for him. The nearest agnate or heir-male on<br />

the father's side was a distant relative, Eobert Johnstone of Eaecleucb.<br />

He was the eldest son of Kobert Johnstone of Eaecleuch and parson of<br />

Lochmaben, the immediate younger brother of the minor's great-grandfather,<br />

James Johnstone, younger of Johnstone. The minor having no uncle or<br />
