Lord Johnstone was mavriofl tn ]iis second wife, Elizabeth, daughter of<br />

the late Sir Samuel Jolmstouc of Elpliinstoue, Knight Baronet, in 16t3.<br />

Tlic contract of marriage, which is entered into between James, Lord John-<br />

stone of Lnchwood,and Dame Elizabeth Johnstone, is dated at the Canongate<br />

on Cth ]\Larch of that year. It provides for the celebration of the marriage<br />

between the date of the contract and the 1st of May following. Lord John-<br />

stone obliged himself to infcft Elizabeth Johnstone in the liferent of the<br />

mains of the barony of >s"cwbie, with the tower thereof, and also in an<br />

annnalrent of- 2500 merks out of tlie lands and barony of jSTewbie and lands<br />

of Dunskellie, or out of any part of the same, at the option of Elizabeth<br />

Johnstone, who accepts the same in lieu of all other liferent and conjunct<br />

fee, and of all tcrce lands and third of }novable goods that may fall to her<br />

through the death of Lord Johnstone, and she appoints him her cessioner<br />

and donator in all bonds and obligations granted to her, and in all goods and<br />

plenishings pertaining to her, with power to him loMsc and dispone the same.^<br />

Although in a formal manner Lord Johnstone dutifully acknowledged the<br />

bounty of the king in bestowing on liim the peerage of Lord Johnstone of<br />

Lochwood, his lordship considered he was entitled to a higher dignity of<br />

honour. This appears from his correspondence with Sir llobert Kerr of<br />

Ancram, who was created Earl of Ancram at the same time that Johnstone<br />

was created Lord Johnstone. Lord Ancram, who was a favourite of Xing<br />

Charles the first, and held oflice at court, recommended Lord Johnstone to<br />
