When his father was arranging to join the army of the Covenant,<br />

and testament, appointing his son, the ilaster of Johnstone, the only executor<br />

of his large estate. As the Slaster was then under age, his father showed<br />

great confidence in the piudcnce of his young son to intrust to him this<br />

Four years later he was involved, witli his father and only brother.<br />

Colonel "William Johnstone, in tlie varying struggles betweeii the royalists on<br />

position in these struggles. He was imprisoned with his fatliur in 1644, on<br />

suspicion of complicity in i\Iontrosc's attempt on Dumfries. After the battle<br />

diflerent castles for a considerable time. Eut parliament did not tahe pro-<br />

ceedings against Lord Johnstone as in the case of his father.<br />

In the month of May, less than four months previous to his capture at<br />

Philiphaugh, Lord Johnstone allied himself in marriage to Lady Henrietta<br />

Douglas. Her ladyship was tlie eldest of the six daughters of William, first<br />

Jlarquis of Douglas, by his second marriage with Lad}' JIary Gordon, third<br />

daughter of C4eorge, first Marquis of Huntly. This marriage of Lord John-<br />

stone and the previous marriage of bis fatlicr, tlie ICarl of Hartfell, with Lady<br />

IMargaret Douglas, of Drumlanrig, brought the Johnstones into close alliance<br />

M'ith the Douglases, including William Douglas, Earl of Selkirk and Duke of<br />

Hamilton. Lady ^Margaret Douglas was descended from James, the second<br />

Earl of Douglas and Mar, mIio was the hero of Otterbuin in 1388, while<br />

Lady Henrietta Douglas was descended fiom AVilliam, the first Earl of<br />

Douglas and Mar through the Douglas line of the Earls of Angus. The<br />

marriage contract between James, Lord Johnstone, and Lady Henrietta
