respect and esteem towards you as their landlord.
Your family ha\'c long becji distinguished by the cul'j'vation of con-
siderate and kindly relations with the tenantry on tlie estates, and no one
ever enjoyed or deserved on this account, as also on general grounds, moi'o
profound respect than your lamented grandfather.
It is a high satisfaction and a source of sincere gratitude to us all that
you have folloM-ed in his footsteps in the interest you have taken in our
comfort and welfare.
The general agricultural depression, and the imfavourable seasons which
so persistently prevailed over almost the whole country -during recent years,
influenced our interests to such au extent as to cause many of us to loolc ot;
the situation with concern as one of great gravity indeed : and it Vi'as in
these circumstances that your kindly iutei-est in ns was exhibited b}- yjur
spontaneously olfering us a reduction of ten pier cent, from our rental. Not
only has this' reduction been with equal spontaneity again and again
repeated, but you have given instructions for a revaluation of the pastoral
farms on your estate.
