The practice of continuing distinguished iiames in Scottish fan) dies has
long been observed. The Christian names of John and Gilbert, which were
lield res))ective]y by the oldest known ancestor of the Johnstone family and
hi.s son Sir GiUier , prevailed in the family from (he tv.-eli'th to the fifteenlli
century. In 1-1 ?4, John Johnstone was proprietor of Johnstone, and liis next
brother was Gilbert Johnstone. After them the name of Gilbert was drojiped
in tlie main line, and tliose of John and James became the prevailing
Ciirislian names, and have continued to the ]n'esent time—sometimes in
conjunction.
