Little further is known of tlie history of James Jolmstone. lie is nanred<br />

as a procurator by William Johnstone of Esclicles and I'lshy for resigning<br />

certain lauds into the hands of King James tlie I'lftli.'' During the yeais<br />

1520 and 1521, Jolmstone entered into several arrangements with John<br />

Lindsay of Covington, v^-lio granted to him first a lease of the eighteen<br />

merk land of Polmoody in ilofuitdale for ninelorn j'cars at a yeai-ly rental<br />

of eighteen merks, and afterwards a cliarter of tlieni. Lhe Muvrays of<br />

Cockpool lield a mortgage over I'olmoody, but t!ie reversion was assigned<br />

to Johnstone for 300 merks. Tlie lands were to lie lield from Lindsay<br />

for a silver penny, a!id of the king for a red rose at uiidsummor.^<br />

James Jolmstone of Johnstone was, on 15th r\Iay 1523, appointed one of<br />

the keepers of tlie West ^larehcs of <strong>Scotland</strong>, probably as a deputy to his<br />

brother-in-law. Lord ]\laxv,ell, who was warden. Ife died in August of tlie<br />

following year, and was succeeded by his eldest son. His wife's name has<br />

not been ascertained, but slie was probably jMary, eldest daughter of John,<br />

fourth Lord Maxv.-ell, as in 152S John Johnstone, son of this James<br />

Jolmstone, is described as "sister's son" to Eobert, fifth Lord llaxwell The<br />

issue of that marriage was six sons.<br />

2. Adam Jolmstone, v.-ho received the lands of Conic from liis fatlier, and<br />

was designated Adam John.stone of Conic. Tlie barony of Cunie<br />

formed the greater part of the ancient }iarisli of Conle, wbieli has been<br />
