Annaiidale was a]ipended to the charter.^ Ki"g David the Second, as Lord
of Annandah', lind tlius a special seal whicli iic iised for nil grants of lands
applicable to that lordship. The son of Lady Agnes of Dunbar, George,
tenth Etul of Dunbar and March, under the additional designation "Doininns
vallis Auaudie et Mannie," granted a charier in 1375 to \\hich is appended
his Ejiceial seal apidical'le to Annandale.-
AVbun the Douglas family were in possession of the lordiiiip of Annan-
dale, they quartered the Douglas arms with the arms of An.nandale as used
in the time of the Ihuces, but without tlie lion passant in chief. The Princess
]\Iargaret Stewart, eldest daughter of King Itubeit the Third, survived her
liusband, the first Duke of Tonraine. The duchess was also styled Lady
of Annandalo in a crown charter dated 3d jMay 142G. Her armorial seal
quartei'cd the arms of Annandale with those of Tonraine and Douglas.
Suon after the Earl of Douglas obtained the formal graiit of the lordship
of Annandale iu 1 -tOO, he, by charter dated Sth February of that year, granted
to Sir Herbert Maxv^'eil the oflice of slcwar
