The agreement was .'-igned l.iy all parlies at the house of Lochwood.'
Anoiher gift was given to Johnstone of tin; ward and non-entries of the
also the marriage of the child or children born between the late Xinian
Gra.liame, son and apparent lieir of the last deceased L'obert and
Jehnstone his widow.- The lady here referred to was Margaret Johnstone,
a daughter of Johnstone himself, his relationship being no doubt the cause
of the grant to him.
I'revious to this, perhaps on his return from captivity in England, and as
a compensation for Ids misfortunes, Johnstone had received a grant of the
lands of Castlemilk, forfeited by iJatthew, Earl of Lennox. For this grant
i'l would appear a precept was issiied so early as October 15-15, but it was
nut till the year 1550 that he received a crown charter of the lands.'
Johnstone had already, by a contract, dated 7th Xoverabcr 1533, between
liiai and Archibald Stuart younger of Castlemill;, acquired rights over a
]ioriion of Castlemilk. * The same Archibald, in 15-11, had granted a lease
of the whole lands of Castlemilk to Eobert, fifth Lord Slaxwell.^ In conse-
quence of this lease, and of the present royal grant of the lands to Johnstone,
a comjietitioa of rights took place between him and Eobert, sixth Lord
^Maxwell, as succeeding to his father in the lease. The competing rights and
some other questions in disp)ute were submitted to arbitration, and nn award
