Lord Scaficld had also done his lordship justice. Mr. Carstares after this<br />

continued on friendly tei'ms with Annandale, and at his request endeavoured<br />

to secure him better rooms in Holyrood-house.^<br />

An auspicious event in the family occupied the earl's attention this year<br />

of 1G99. Hugh Cunningliam in a letter to Mr. Carstares thus refers to it:<br />

" 'i'iicre is a marriage on foot betwixt Hopeton and tlic Earl of Annandalc's<br />

daughter, which I hope will make a better understanding betwixt them."^<br />

The bridegroom was Charles Hope of Hopetoun and the britle Lady Henrietta<br />

Johnstone, the only surviving daughter of the carl and countess. The mar-<br />

riage ceremou}' was celebrated on the 31st of August 1C99. Four years<br />

thereafter, on 5th April 1703, the Laird of Hopetoun was raised to the<br />

peerage as Earl of Hopetoun, Viscount Aithrie, Lord Hope, etc., with limita-<br />

tion to him and the heirs-male of his body, whom failing to the heirs-female<br />

of his body.<br />

Tiie news of Darieu being deserted created a great stir in <strong>Scotland</strong> in the<br />

year 1G99. A meeting of the general council of the company was held, and<br />

it was resolved to sign an address to the king. Annandale and others advised<br />

delay, only to be overruled. The meeting also voted to address the privy<br />

council. " Here luy Lord Annandale said he v.-ould then treat that address<br />

as it deserved. My Lord Tullibardine said these words were not to be<br />

endured." The treasurer-depute feared they would liave thrown the candle-<br />

sticks at each other, but the altercation ended with a resolution to address<br />

the council.* The Earl of Marchmont was very well satisfied with the part<br />

which Annandale acted.* So was ]\Ir. Carstares.'' So also was tiie king, who<br />
