forfeited possessions, and was known as James Johnstone of Xeiss,
whieJi is a small property in MofTatdale. He died without issue.
4. James Johnstone, known as Captain James Johnstone of Lochhoiise, near
Jloffat. He held t!ic lands of Thmnick, Pocoruell, and various others.
He died between 1G21 and 1C32. He left no lawful issue, but he had
an illegitimate son, James Johnstone of Corehead. James Johnstone of
Keiss, son of his brother, was retoured his lawful heir in February I(J3i.^
The daughters of tliis chief were
1. Dorothea, eldest daughter of the second marriage. She is said to have
Diarried John Maitland of Auchingasse!, iu the county of Dumfries.
2. Jlargaret, second daughter of second marriage. She niarried in 1.50G,
Christopher, sou of Edviard ]r\ii!g of iJonshaw, in the county of
Dumfries.
3. Elizabeth or Bessie, mentioned V)'Ith hor two sisters in their father's w ill in
15G2, but her later history has not been ascertained.-

certainty as to tlie date of his birtli, but there is evidence that it occurred
