7.1.4.4 Replacing the coolant
Only use corrosion protection agents/antifreeze approved by Mercedes-Benz.
The coolant must be exchanged every three years. At all events, comply with the
regionally applicable regulations on environmentally compatible disposal of coolant.
– Before renewing the coolant, check the cooling and heating system for leaks and
condition.
– Slowly open the filler cover of the engine cooling system; relieve excess pressure
and then detach the filler cover.
The valve for draining off the coolant is located above the starter motor behind the
exhaust pipe of the diesel engine.
Attention! Risk of burns on the hot engine block and the hot exhaust pipe. Wait until
the engine has cooled down adequately before changing the coolant. To protect against
burns, wear suitable protective clothing (working clothing and protective gloves).
– Screw the drain hose onto the coolant drain valve on the engine block.
– Drain off the coolant and catch it in a suitable vessel.
– Fill with premixed and approved coolant
(filling capacity approx. 25-30 liters).
– Set the desired temperature of the air conditioning system to the maximum
temperature, so that the control valve of the heating system is opened.
– Switch on the heating system of the hydraulic fluid tank (lever up).
– If your machine is fitted with an independent heating system, switch it on.
– Top up with coolant with the prescribed composition up to the lower edge of the filler
neck.
– Start the engine and let it run for about 1 minute at various speeds.
