Les dernières centaines de mètres du trajet furent entièrement<br />

occupées par ces pensées mi-ennuyeuses, mi-comiques, c’est-à-dire<br />

doub<strong>le</strong>ment ennuyeuses (« bo-oring »), auxquel<strong>le</strong>s il reprochait de <strong>le</strong><br />

distraire de cette occupation capita<strong>le</strong> qu’était devenu l’impardonnab<strong>le</strong>,<br />

comme s’il avait contracté l’obligation assermentée, cheva<strong>le</strong>resque, de<br />

rester aussi attentif que <strong>le</strong> paysage. Il faisait presque nuit maintenant,<br />

on apercevait une lueur dans l’appartement, au rez-de-chaussée suré<strong>le</strong>vé<br />

de l’immeub<strong>le</strong> Wandal, à gauche. Jill devait être rentrée et avoir allumé<br />

<strong>le</strong> lampadaire halogène dans la sal<strong>le</strong> de séjour. En effet, il n’y avait plus<br />

aucun courrier dans la boîte aux <strong>le</strong>ttres de l’appartement nº 1.<br />

NO MAIL TODAY. Not that she expected any. The only two<br />

persons in the world who still knew her from her past<br />

existence as Matilda, were Robert and her niece, Kathy,<br />

the eldest daughter of her half-sister. Neither of them ever wrote to her.<br />

She saw them once in a whi<strong>le</strong>, Robert at home, her niece in town, usually<br />

in a rather dark underground cafeteria in the City, close to the Rocks,<br />

where it was very improbab<strong>le</strong> that her family could have her spotted.<br />

Not even her solicitor, George Bai<strong>le</strong>y, of Bai<strong>le</strong>y, Gregory and Robertson,<br />

Clarence St., Sydney, had been given permission to forward <strong>le</strong>tters to<br />

her present address; she had a P.O. Box in Crow’s Nest, somewhere off<br />

the straight line between the school and her apartment. At home she<br />

sometimes received O.H.M.S. mail in the name of Caroline Matthews,<br />

e<strong>le</strong>ctoral propaganda, bills, professional correspondence from the school,<br />

the teachers union, the A.G.T.A. (Australasian Geography Teachers<br />

Association), and the coup<strong>le</strong> of art magazines she still subscribed to,<br />

although she had not painted or visited an exhibition for years. She had<br />

probably become unab<strong>le</strong> to paint anyway, even if she had wanted to.<br />

Forgotten the litt<strong>le</strong> technique she had ever mastered. The few paintings
