7110.65P2/19/04e. When arresting system operation has beenrequested, inform the pilot of the indicatedbarrier/cable position.PHRASEOLOGY−(Identification), BARRIER/CABLE INDICATESUP/DOWN. CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF/TO LAND.f. Time permitting, advise pilots of the availabilityof all arresting systems on the runway in questionwhen a pilot requests barrier information.g. If an aircraft engages a raised barrier/cable,initiate crash alarm procedures immediately.h. For preplanned practice engagements notassociated with emergencies, crash alarm systemsneed not be activated if, in accordance with localmilitary operating procedures, all required notificationsare made before the practice engagement.REFERENCE−FAAO 7110.65, Airport Conditions, Para 4−7−12.3−3−7. FAR FIELD MONITOR (FFM) REMOTESTATUS UNITa. Background.1. To meet the demand for more facilitiescapable of operating under CAT III weather, Type IIequipment is being upgraded to Integrity Level 3.This integrity level will support operations whichplace a high degree of reliance on ILS guidance forpositioning through touchdown.2. Installation of the FFM remote statusindicating units is necessary to attain the integritynecessary to meet internationally agreed uponreliability values in support of CAT III operations onType II ILS equipment. The remote status indicatingunit used in conjunction with Type II equipment addsa third integrity test; thereby, producing an approachaid which has integrity capable of providing Level 3service.3. The remote status sensing unit, wheninstalled in the tower cab, will give immediateindications of localizer out-of-tolerance conditions. The alarm in the FFM remote status sensing unitindicates an inoperative or an out-of-tolerancelocalizer signal; e.g., the course may have shifted dueto equipment malfunction or vehicle/aircraft encroachmentinto the critical area.b. Procedures.1. Operation of the FFM remote sensing unitwill be based on the prevailing weather. The FFMremote sensing unit shall be operational when theweather is below CAT I ILS minimums.2. When the weather is less than that requiredfor CAT I operations, the GRN−27 FFM remote statussensing unit shall be set at:(a) “CAT II” when the RVR is less than 2,400feet.(b) “CAT III” when the RVR is less than1,200 feet.3. When the remote status unit indicates that thelocalizer FFM is in alarm (aural warning followingthe preset delay) and:(a) The aircraft is outside the middle marker(MM), check for encroachment those portions of thecritical area that can be seen from the tower. It isunderstood that the entire critical area may not bevisible due to low ceilings and poor visibility. Thecheck is strictly to determine possible causal factorsfor the out-of-tolerance situation. If the alarm has notcleared prior to the aircraft’s arriving at the MM,immediately issue an advisory that the FFM remotestatus sensing unit indicates the localizer isunreliable.(b) The aircraft is between the MM and theinner marker (IM), immediately issue an advisorythat the FFM remote status sensing unit indicates thelocalizer is unreliable.PHRASEOLOGY−CAUTION, MONITOR INDICATES RUNWAY (number)LOCALIZER UNRELIABLE.(c) The aircraft has passed the IM, there is noaction requirement. Although the FFM has beenmodified with filters which dampen the effect of falsealarms, you may expect alarms when aircraft arelocated between the FFM and the localizer antennaeither on landing or on takeoff.REFERENCE−FAAO 7110.65, Airport Conditions, Para 4−7−12.3−3−4Airport Conditions
