APPLICATIONUse the ATIS, where available, to provide advancenoncontrol airport/terminal area and meteorologicalinformation to aircraft.a. Identify each ATIS message by a phonetic lettercode word at both the beginning and the end of themessage. Automated systems will have the phoneticletter code automatically appended. Exceptions maybe made where omissions are required because ofspecial programs or equipment.1. Each alphabet letter phonetic word shall beused sequentially, except as authorized in subpara a2,beginning <strong>with</strong> “Alpha,” ending <strong>with</strong> “Zulu,” andrepeated <strong>with</strong>out regard to the beginning of a newday. Identify the first resumed broadcast message<strong>with</strong> “Alpha” or the first assigned alphabet letterword in the event of a broadcast interruption of morethan 12 hours.2. Specific sequential portions of the alphabetmay be assigned between facilities or an arrival anddeparture ATIS when designated by a letter ofagreement or facility directive.REFERENCE−FAAO 7210.3, Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS),Para 10−4−1.b. The ATIS recording shall be reviewed forcompleteness, accuracy, speech rate, and properenunciation before being transmitted.c. Arrival and departure messages, when broadcastseparately, need only contain informationappropriate for that operation.2−9−2. OPERATING PROCEDURESMaintain an ATIS message that reflects the mostcurrent arrival and departure information.a. Make a new recording when any of thefollowing occur:1. Upon receipt of any new official weatherregardless of whether there is or is not a change invalues.2. When runway braking action reports arereceived that indicate runway braking is worse thanthat which is included in the current ATIS broadcast.3. When there is a change in any other pertinentdata, such as runway change, instrument approach inuse, new or canceled NOTAMs/PIREPs/HIWASupdate, etc.b. When a pilot acknowledges that he/she hasreceived the ATIS broadcast, controllers may omitthose items contained in the broadcasts if they arecurrent. Rapidly changing conditions will be issuedby ATC, and the ATIS will contain the following:EXAMPLE−“Latest ceiling/visibility/altimeter/wind/(otherconditions) will be issued by approach control/tower.”c. Broadcast on all appropriate frequencies toadvise aircraft of a change in the ATIS code/message.d. <strong>Control</strong>lers shall ensure that pilots receive themost current pertinent information. Ask the pilot toconfirm receipt of the current ATIS information if thepilot does not initially state the appropriate ATIScode. <strong>Control</strong>lers shall ensure that <strong>changes</strong> topertinent operational information is provided afterthe initial confirmation of ATIS information isestablished. Issue the current weather, runway in use,approach information, and pertinent NOTAMs topilots who are unable to receive the ATIS.EXAMPLE−“Verify you have information ALPHA.”“Information BRAVO now current, visibility three miles.”“Information CHARLIE now current, Ceiling 1500Broken.”“Information CHARLIE now current, advise when youhave CHARLIE.”Automatic Terminal Information Service Procedures2−9−1
