DEPARTURE TERMINOLOGYAvoid using the term “takeoff” except to actuallyclear an aircraft for takeoff or to cancel a takeoffclearance. Use such terms as “depart,” “departure,” or“fly” in clearances when necessary.REFERENCE−FAAO 7110.65, Takeoff Clearance, Para 3−9−9.FAAO 7110.65, Cancellation of Takeoff Clearance, Para 3−9−10.4−3−2. DEPARTURE CLEARANCESInclude the following items in IFR departureclearances:NOTE−When considered necessary, controllers or pilots mayinitiate read backs of a clearance. Some pilots may berequired by company rule to do so.a. Always include the airport of departure whenissuing a departure clearance for relay to an aircraftby an FSS, dispatcher, etc.b. Clearance Limit.1. Specify the destination airport when practicable,even though it is outside controlled airspace.Issue short range clearances as provided for in anyprocedures established for their use.2. For <strong>Air</strong> Force One (A1) operations, do notspecify the destination airport.NOTE−Presidential detail is responsible for ensuring the accuracyof the destination airport.PHRASEOLOGY−DESTINATION AS FILED.c. Departure Procedures.1. Specify direction of takeoff/turn or initialheading/azimuth to be flown after takeoff as follows:(a) Locations <strong>with</strong> <strong>Air</strong>port <strong>Traffic</strong> <strong>Control</strong>Service− Specify these items as necessary.(b) Locations <strong>with</strong>out <strong>Air</strong>port <strong>Traffic</strong> <strong>Control</strong>Service, but <strong>with</strong>in a Class E surface area− specifythese items if necessary. Obtain/solicit the pilot’sconcurrence concerning these items before issuingthem in a clearance.NOTE−Direction of takeoff and turn after takeoff can beobtained/solicited directly from the pilot, or relayed by anFSS, dispatcher, etc., as obtained/solicited from the pilot.(c) At all other airports− Do not specifydirection of takeoff/turn after takeoff. If necessary tospecify an initial heading/azimuth to be flown aftertakeoff, issue the initial heading/azimuth so as toapply only <strong>with</strong>in controlled airspace.2. Where only textually described instrumentdeparture procedures have been published for alocation and pilot compliance is necessary to insureseparation, include the procedure as part of the ATCclearance.EXAMPLE−“Depart via the (airport name) (runway number)departure procedure.”NOTE−IFR takeoff minimums and departure procedures areprescribed for specific airports/runways and published ina tabular form supplement to the FAA instrument approachprocedure chart and appropriate FAA Form 8260. Theseprocedures are identified on instrument approachprocedure charts <strong>with</strong> a symbol:3.
