8/5/047110.65P CHG 1FIG 4−8−2Approach Clearance ExampleFor RNAV Aircrafte. Where a Terminal Arrival Area (TAA) has beenestablished to support RNAV approaches use theprocedures under subpara b1 and b2 above. (SeeFIG 4−8−3.)EXAMPLE−Aircraft 1: The aircraft has crossed the TAA boundary andis established on a segment of the approach. “ClearedR−NAV Runway One Eight Approach.”Aircraft 2: The aircraft is inbound to the CHARR (rightcorner) IAF on an unpublished direct route at 7,000 feet. The minimum IFR altitude for IFR operations (14 CFRSection 91.177) along this flight path to the IAF is 5,000feet. “Cleared to CHARR, Maintain at or above fivethousand until entering the TAA, Cleared R−NAV RunwayOne Eight Approach.”f. For GPS UNRELIABLE NOTAMs, informpilots requesting a GPS or RNAV approach that GPSis unreliable and clear the aircraft for the approach. This advisory may be omitted if contained in theAutomated Terminal Information System (ATIS)broadcast.EXAMPLE−Aircraft 1 can be cleared direct to CENTR. The interceptangle at that IAF is 90 degrees or less. The minimumaltitude for IFR operations (14 CFR Section 91.177) alongthe flight path to the IAF is 3,000 feet. “Cleared directCENTR, maintain at or above three thousand until CENTR,cleared R−NAV Runway One Eight approach.”Aircraft 2 cannot be cleared direct to CENTR. The interceptangle is greater than 90 degrees and there is no hold in lieuof procedure turn pattern depicted. Aircraft 2 can becleared direct to LEFTT. The intercept angle at that IAF is90 degrees or less. The minimum altitude for IFRoperations (14 CFR Section 91.177) along the flight pathto the IAF is 3,000 feet. “Cleared direct LEFTT, maintainat or above three thousand until LEFTT, cleared R−NAVRunway One Eight approach.”c. Except when applying radar procedures, timedor visual approaches, clear an aircraft for an approachto an airport when the preceding aircraft has landedor canceled IFR flight plan.d. Where instrument approaches require radarmonitoring and radar services are not available, donot use the phraseology “cleared approach,” whichallows the pilot his/her choice of instrumentapproaches.g. For pilot reported GPS anomalies, advisesubsequent aircraft requesting a GPS or RNAVapproach that GPS is unreliable and clear the aircraftfor the approach. This advisory may be discontinuedafter 15 minutes if no subsequent reports are received.REFERENCE−FAAO 7110.65, NAVAID Malfunction, Para 2−1−10.FAAO 7110.65, Airport Conditions, Para 4−7−12.PHRASEOLOGY−CLEARED (approach), GPS UNRELIABLE.h. For Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)UNAVAILABLE NOTAMs, advise aircraft requestinga GPS or RNAV approach that WAAS isunavailable and clear the aircraft for the approach. This advisory may be omitted if contained in the ATISbroadcast.PHRASEOLOGY−CLEARED (approach), WAAS UNAVAILABLE.NOTE−1. WAAS UNAVAILABLE NOTAMs indicate a failure of aWAAS system component. GPS/WAAS equipment reverts toGPS−only operation and satisfies the requirements forbasic GPS equipment.2. WAAS UNRELIABLE NOTAMs indicate predictivecoverage, are published for pilot preflight planning, and donot require any controller action.Approach Clearance Procedures4−8−3
