2/19/047110.65PSection 3. Longitudinal Separation8−3−1. APPLICATIONa. Longitudinal separation shall be applied so thatthe spacing between the estimated positions of theaircraft being separated is never less than a prescribedminimum.FIG 8−3−1Same CoursesNOTE−Consider separation to exist when the estimated positionsof the aircraft being separated are never less than aprescribed minimum.b. In situations where one aircraft requires adifferent time−based longitudinal standard thananother, apply the larger of the two standards betweenthe aircraft concerned.c. Longitudinal separation expressed in distancemay be applied as prescribed in Chapter 6, Nonradar.d. In situations where an update to a controlestimate indicates that the minimum being applied nolonger exists, controllers shall ensure that separationis reestablished. Issue traffic information as necessary.2. Crossing tracks. Ensure that the estimatedspacing at the point of intersection is not less than theapplicable minimum required. (See FIG 8−3−2.)FIG 8−3−2Crossing Courses8−3−2. SEPARATION METHODSa. For the purpose of application of longitudinalseparation, the terms same track shall be consideredidentical to same course, reciprocal tracks shall beconsidered identical to reciprocal courses, andcrossing tracks, shall be considered identical tocrossing courses.NOTE−Refer to para 1−2−2, Course Definitions.b. Separate aircraft longitudinally in accordancewith the following:1. Same track. Ensure that the estimatedspacing between aircraft is not less than theapplicable minimum required.
