COURSE DEFINITIONSThe following definitions shall be used in theapplication of the separation criteria in this order.NOTE−The term “protected airspace,” as used in this paragraph,is the airspace equal to one half the required applicablelateral separation on either side of an aircraft along itsprojected flight path. If the protected airspace of twoaircraft does not overlap, applicable lateral separation isensured.a. SAME COURSES are courses whose protectedairspaces are coincident, overlap, or intersect andwhose angular difference is less than 45 degrees.(See FIG 1−2−1.)b. CROSSING COURSES are intersecting courseswhose angular difference is 45 through 135 degreesinclusive. (See FIG 1−2−1.)c. OPPOSITE/RECIPROCAL COURSES arecourses whose protected airspaces are coincident,overlap, or intersect and whose angular difference isgreater than 135 degrees through 180 degreesinclusive.
