DEPARTURE SEPARATIONSeparate a departing aircraft from a precedingdeparting or arriving aircraft using the same sea laneby ensuring that it does not commence takeoff until:a. The other aircraft has departed and crossed theend of the sea lane or turned to avert any conflict. (SeeFIG 3−12−1). If you can determine distances byreference to suitable landmarks, the other aircraftneed only be airborne if the following minimumdistance exists between aircraft:1. When only Category I aircraft are involved−1,500 feet.2. When a Category I aircraft is preceded by aCategory II aircraft− 3,000 feet.3. When either the succeeding or both areCategory II aircraft− 3,000 feet.4. When either is a Category III aircraft− 6,000feet. A preceding landing aircraft has taxied out ofthe sea lane.NOTE−Due to the absence of braking capability, caution should beexercised when instructing a float plane to hold a positionas the aircraft will continue to move because of propgenerated thrust. Clearance to taxi into position and holdshould, therefore, be followed by takeoff or other clearanceas soon as practicable.3−12−3. ARRIVAL SEPARATIONSeparate an arriving aircraft from another aircraftusing the same sea lane by ensuring that the arrivingaircraft does not cross the landing threshold until oneof the following conditions exists:a. The other aircraft has landed and taxied out ofthe sea lane. Between sunrise and sunset, if you candetermine distances by reference to suitablelandmarks and the other aircraft has landed, it neednot be clear of the sea lane if the following minimumdistance from the landing threshold exists:Sea Lane Operations3−12−1
