This group has a limited set of user rights, so some functions are not available tomembers of the Backup Operators group.Here is a list of the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client operations that amember of the Backup Operators can do:v Back up <strong>and</strong> restore files (see Table 18 on page 81)v Back up system statev Restore system state (Windows XP <strong>and</strong> 2003 only)On Windows Vista, Windows 7, <strong>and</strong> Windows 2008, you must be a member ofthe Administrators group to restore system state.v Start the TSM scheduler serviceHere is a list of the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client operations that amember of the Backup Operators cannot do:vvvvvStart any other services (TSM client acceptor, TSM remote client agent, <strong>and</strong> TSMjournal service)Install <strong>and</strong> configure client servicesUse open file support (OFS)Back up <strong>and</strong> restore imagesBack up <strong>and</strong> restore Windows file sharesConsiderations before you start using a Backup Operatorsgroup accountThere are some items that you need to consider before you use a Backup Operatorsgroup account to back up, archive, restore, or retrieve your data.Consider these items before using a Backup Operators group account to back up,archive, restore, or retrieve your data:vvvvvIf you have already been using the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archiveclient with an Administrators group account you might not be able to launch theclient because you cannot open the log files (for example dsmerror.log). Toalleviate this problem, you can grant the Backup Operators group Read <strong>and</strong>Write permissions to the log files or the directories containing these log files.If you have been creating Windows 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 systemstate backups with an account that is a member of the Administrators group,<strong>and</strong> if you want to start backing up or restoring data with an account that is amember of the Backup Operators group, you must delete the staging directory,c:\adsm.sys, before backing up or restoring the system state as a member of theBackup Operators group.If you have existing backups from a Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.2 orearlier client <strong>and</strong> you attempt an incremental backup of an existing file spacewith a member of the Backup Operators group, all of the data appears aschanged <strong>and</strong> it is resent to the Tivoli Storage Manager Server.Members of the Backup Operators group might not be able to back up or restorefile data that was encrypted by an Administrator account using the Windowsencrypting file system (EFS).Members of the Backup Operators group do not have the proper authority toupdate the last access time for files that is encrypted with the Windowsencrypting file system (EFS). If EFS files are restored by a member of the BackupOperators group, the last access time will not be preserved.Chapter 3. Getting started 83
