data flow through a Tivoli Storage Manager client or server. Data that is backedup to Tivoli Storage Manager using NDMP cannot be migrated, reclaimed, orbacked up to a copy storage pool. These are some limitations of NAS file server data when using CIFS:v Security information that is associated with the files and directories might not beprocessed.v Performance degradation occurs because data is being accessed remotely.v The mapped drives appear to Tivoli Storage Manager as NTFS file systems, butthey might not have the full functionality of NTFS functionality. For example, the encryption attribute of a file is set, but when the client backs up the file, thebackup fails because the volume-level encryption setting indicates thatencryption cannot be used for the volume.Tip: Use NDMP with Tivoli Storage Manager on a NAS file server to back upand restore volumes instead of backing up and restoring the volumes usingremote mapped drives.Related reference“Snapdiff” on page 464Support for CDP Persistent Storage ManagerPersistent Storage Manager (PSM) is the snapshot technology that is included witha number of Microsoft Server Appliance Kit based NAS boxes including the IBMTotalStorage NAS 200, 300, and 300G.You can use the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client to back up thepersistent images (PI) of a volume produced by PSM. You must first ensure thatthe volume has a label. You can then use PSM to schedule or create a persistentimage with a specific image name, such as snapshot.daily, and set the number ofimages to save to 1. PSM overwrites the PI as needed and you can use TivoliStorage Manager to incrementally back up the PI. In this case, Tivoli StorageManager only backs up the files that changed between snapshots. One advantageof backing up a PSM PI rather than the actual volume, is that there are no openfiles in the PI.Consider the following items before using Persistent Storage Manager:v By default, a PSM schedule uses a variable name (snapshot.%i) and keeps anumber of images.vvvImportant: Do not use Tivoli Storage Manager with PSM in this way. TivoliStorage Manager sees each image as unique and makes a complete copy of each.Tivoli Storage Manager requires that the volume used to make the PI has a label. If the volume does not have a label, Tivoli Storage Manager will not back up itsPI.You use the Tivoli Storage Manager image backup function to back up theoriginal volume used to create the PI, but you cannot use the backup imagefunction to back up the PI.To avoid backing up unnecessary files when backing up PSM, include thefollowing entries in your client option file (dsm.opt):exclude.dir "Persistent Storage Manager State"exclude.file "*.psm"exclude.file "*.otm"Chapter 4.
