Burn the CD using the method described by your CD burning software.Restoring the operating system with Automated SystemRecovery (Windows XP <strong>and</strong> Windows Server 2003)If the computer is not working, you can recover a Windows XP or Windows Server2003 computer with Automated System Recovery (ASR).1. Insert the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating system installationCD into the CD drive.2. Restart your computer. Press the appropriate key to start from the CD. Youmight need to configure your computer BIOS to enable start from the CD.3. Press F6 if you need to install any vendor-acquired SCSI or RAID drivers.4. Press F2 to enter the ASR recovery mode during text mode section of Setup.5. Insert the ASR recovery diskette (TSMASR) into the diskette drive whenprompted for the Windows ASR recovery diskette. The following tasks areperformed automatically: (1) Windows reads the asrpnp.sif file from thediskette, <strong>and</strong> (2) Windows reformats the boot volume <strong>and</strong> might reformatother partitions on the disk if the partition layout is different than the originalsystem. This partitioning <strong>and</strong> format process can cause several restarts.6. Insert the Tivoli Storage Manager installation CD (TSMCLI) into the CD drivewhen prompted. The Tivoli Storage Manager client package (TSMCLI.EXE) iscopied to the %SystemRoot%\temp directory.7. Insert the ASR recovery diskette (TSMASR) again when prompted. Thetsmasr.opt, tsmasr.cmd, <strong>and</strong> waitforevent.exe files are copied to the%SystemRoot%\temp directory.8. Remove the diskette when prompted, prior to system restart. The systemrestarts into GUI-mode setup.9. Insert the operating system CD into the drive when prompted. The promptmessage is unclear; it reads as follows:Setup was unable [to] access files needed to continue. This could becaused by an error on the CD Media or the CD is no longer present inthe drive.After setup is completed, the tsmasr.cmd file runs. The Tivoli Storage Managerclient is silently installed.You are prompted to choose whether you want to restore from a networkconnected Tivoli Storage Manager server (press 1), a local backup set from file(press 2), or a local backup set from tape (press 3).10. Choose the location of your backup copies.Tivoli Storage Manager prompts for your ID <strong>and</strong> password if you arerestoring from the Tivoli Storage Manager server. If you are restoring from thelocal backup set, you are prompted for the path to the local backup set, forexample r:\backupsetfile1.ost. You are prompted for subsequent volumes ifyour backup set occupies more than one volume.Tivoli Storage Manager comm<strong>and</strong>s are issued to restore the boot drive <strong>and</strong>system drive.Tivoli Storage Manager comm<strong>and</strong>s are issued to restore system objects(Windows XP) or to restore system state (Windows Server 2003).On Windows XP:The comm<strong>and</strong> file exits <strong>and</strong> the workstation restarts. Remove the ASRrecovery diskette (TSMASR) from the drive. The operating systemcomes up in fully recovered state.Chapter 5. Restoring your data 179
