Restriction: Do not exceed the 64-character limit for user and group names. TivoliStorage Manager shortens the name to fall within this limit by using the followingalgorithm: Use the first 53 characters, append a forward slash (/), and then use thenumeric ID as a character string. An error message is logged that contains both the long name and the resultingshortened string. For most functions, you do not need to be aware of the shortenedname. The exceptions are:v The set access commandv The fromowner optionv The users and groups (authorization) optionsIn each of these cases, when you need to enter a name, you either have to find theerror message containing the transformation, or construct the name using theabove outlined rule.Incremental, selective, or incremental-by-date backups (Windows)Your administrator might set up schedules to automatically perform backups. Thefollowing sections discuss how to back up files without a schedule. There are three types of incremental backup: full, partial, and incremental-by-date.If you are using HSM for Windows, incremental backup might recall migratedfiles, while selective backup and archive always recall migrated files, if you do notuse the skipmigrated option. Using incremental-by-date will not back up anymigrated file. Refer to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for HSM for WindowsAdministration Guide for details about using the skipmigrated option andincremental-by-date processing of migrated files.Related tasks“Set the client scheduler process to run as a background task and startautomatically at startup” on page 221Full and partial incremental backupAn incremental backup backs up only new and changed files. Whether youperform a full or partial incremental backup depends on what you select forbackup. If you select entire drives, you are performing a full incremental backup. If youselect a directory tree or individual files, you are performing a partial incrementalbackup. The first time you run a full incremental backup, Tivoli Storage Manager backs upall the files and directories that you specify. This process can take a long time if thenumber of files is large, or if one or more very large files must be backed up.Subsequent full incremental backups only back up new and changed files. Thisallows the backup server to maintain current versions of your files, without havingto waste time or space by backing up files that already exist in server storage.Depending on your storage management policies, the server might keep more thanone version of your files in storage. The most recently backed up files are activebackup versions. Older copies of your backed up files are inactive versions. However, if you delete a file from your workstation, the next full incrementalbackup causes the active backup version of the file to become inactive.
