Options FilePlace this option in the client options file (dsm.opt). You can set this option on theGeneral tab of the Preferences editor.Syntax►►ENABLE8DOT3NAMESupportNoYes►◄ParametersNo Short 8.3 names for files with long file names are not backed up or restored. This is the default.YesShort 8.3 names for files with long file names are backed up and restored. Each short name uses up to 14 additional bytes in the server database.Although this is a small number, if there are a large number of files with short8.3 names on a large number of Windows systems, this can impact the size ofthe Tivoli Storage Manager server database.Important: Consult with your Tivoli Storage Manager server administrator beforeusing this option. The first backup that runs with this option causes all files that have short 8.3names to be updated on the Tivoli Storage Manager server, even if the files havenot otherwise changed. This is because the client is adding the short 8.3 names tothe active backup versions. If this option is enabled for restore, the client attempts to set the short 8.3 name forrestored files, even if short name generation is disabled on the Windows system. The client must run under a Windows account that possesses theSE_RESTORE_NAME privilege in order for this option to be effective. See yoursystem administrator if you have questions about account privileges.During restore, the short 8.3 name of a file is not restored if another object in thesame directory already has the same short 8.3 name. In this case, the file is restoredand an informational message is logged indicating that the short name could notbe set. If the file must be restored with its original short name, you need to resolvethe conflict with the existing file, and then try the restore again.Important: This parameter can cause unexpected results in some cases. Forexample, if the short name of a file changes between the last time the file wasbacked up and the time it is restored, and there is a link or registry entry thatrefers to the newer short name, then restoring the file with the older short nameinvalidates the references to the newer short name.ExamplesOptions file:enable8dot3namesupport yesCommand line:-enable8dot3namesupport=yes356 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Backup-Archive Clients: Installation and User's Guide
