The traditional offline image backup prevents write access to the volume by othersystem applications during the operation. When backing up an image usingsnapshotproviderimage=none, after a restore always run the fsck utility. To restore an image backup of a volume, the Tivoli Storage Manager client must beable to obtain an exclusive lock on the volume being restored. If the Tivoli Storage Manager online image support is configured, Tivoli StorageManger performs an online image backup, during which the volume is available toother system applications. The snapshot provider, as specified by thesnapshotproviderimage option, maintains a consistent image of a volume duringonline image backup. If you use VSS, you do not need to install LVSA.You can use the snapshotproviderimage option with the backup image commandor the include.image option to specify whether to perform an offline or onlineimage backup.Related tasks“Configuring online-image backup support” on page 62Related reference“Snapshotproviderimage” on page 474Performing prerequisite tasks before creating an imagebackupThis topic lists some items to consider before you perform an image backup. The following items are the image backup considerations.v To perform an offline or online image backup you must have administrative authority onthe system.v You do not need more than one drive to perform an image backup.v Ensure that no other application is using the volume when you run an offlineimage backup. To ensure a consistent image during backup processing, the clientlocks the volume, so that no other applications can write to it. If the volume isin use when the client attempts to lock the volume, the backup fails. If the clientcannot lock a volume because it is in use, you can perform an online imagebackup.v Use the include.image option to assign a management class to the volumeimage. If you do not assign a management class, the default management classis used for the image.vvvNote: If the snapshotproviderimage option is set to none, then the copyserialization parameters set by the management class is used. You can exclude a volume from image backup using the exclude.image option. You must use the mount point or drive letter for the volume on which you wantto perform an image backup. Tivoli Storage Manager will not back up a volumewithout the use of a drive letter or mount point.Do not include the system drive in an image backup because the client cannothave an exclusive lock of the system drive during the restore and the systemdrive image cannot be restored to the same location. Image backup does notguarantee consistency of system objects, such as the Active Directory. Systemobjects can be spread out across multiple volumes, and should be backed upChapter 4.
