eporting purposes. Tivoli Storage Manager uses a much more sophisticatedmethod to determine candidacy for incremental backup. There are several applications which manipulate or examine the Windows archiveattribute. Be aware of the ramifications of using the resetarchiveattribute option inconjunction with these products. If you set the resetarchiveattribute option to yes, after a file has been successfullybacked up to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, the Tivoli Storage Manager clientresets the Windows archive attribute on the local file system:vvvThe Windows archive attribute is reset during incremental and selective backupsafter the file has been successfully committed to the Tivoli Storage Managerdatabase. This attribute is not reset for archive, or image operations. The Windows archive attribute is not reset when processing system objects orsystem state objects. The Windows archive attribute is not reset for directory entries. In addition, in order for the local file system to reflect the current active objectinventory on the Tivoli Storage Manager server, the resetarchiveattribute optioninstructs the Tivoli Storage Manager client to reset the Windows archive attributeon the local file system if it is determined during incremental backup that a valid, active backup copy of the file already exists on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. This behavior is not displayed in the following cases:vvIncremental backup operations which do not examine the stored client attributeson the Tivoli Storage Manager server, such as journal-based backup orincremental-by-date processing.Files that are not examined during an incremental backup operation becausethey are excluded from backup processing. The Tivoli Storage Manager client does not guarantee the accuracy of the currentsetting of the Windows archive attribute. For example, if the resetarchiveattributeoption is set to yes and a file examined by a reporting product indicates that theWindows archive attribute is OFF for a particular file, this does not necessarilymean that a valid, active backup copy of the file exists on the Tivoli StorageManager server. Factors that could contribute to this type of situation include:v An independent software vendor product is manipulating the Windows archiveattributev A file space was deleted from the Tivoli Storage Manager serverv A backup tape was lost or destroyedThere should be no significant performance degradation when using theresetarchiveattribute option. The resetarchiveattribute option does not affect restoreprocessing.Supported ClientsThis option is valid for all Windows clients. The server can also define this option.Options FileThis option is valid in the client options file (dsm.opt) or server client options set.You can set this option on the Backup tab of the Preferences editor.Chapter 12.
