Example 2: To specify fixed drive c:, enterdomain c: \\remote\share1 \\remote\c$Examples: Universal Naming Convention backupYou can back up shared files in a network through the use of a UNC name. Thistopic shows some examples of backing up UNC name files.A UNC name is a network resource name for a share point on a workstation. Theresource name includes the workstation name assigned to the workstation and aname you assign to a drive or directory so that it can be shared. The name youassign is also called a share point name.Using a UNC name permits you to back up specific shared directories to a separatefile space. This is useful if, for example, you or an administrator want to back up asmall portion of data that you would otherwise be unable to access. Drives are notbacked up to a separate file space.Every local drive is accessible using a UNC name except for drives containingremovable media (such as tapes, cartridges or diskettes). Access these drives byusing a predefined administrative share name consisting of the workstation nameand the local drive letter, followed by $. For example, to specify a UNC name onthe c: drive for workstation ocean, enter:\\ocean\c$The $ sign must be included with the drive letter. To enter a UNC name for workstation ocean and share point wave, enter:\\ocean\waveWhen accessing files, you do not need to enter the letter of the drive except fordrives containing removable media.See the following table for examples showing selective backup of files using UNCnames. In these examples, assume that:v The workstation running dsmc is major.vShare names betarc and testdir from workstation alpha1 are mapped to drivesr and t, respectively.Table 26.
