||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||Restoring the operating system with Automated SystemRecovery (Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server2008)You can restore the operating system of a Windows Vista, Windows 7, or WindowsServer 2008 computer with Automated System Recovery (ASR).Ensure that you have the bootable WinPE CD that contains a Tivoli StorageManager client. Ensure that you have portable media with a Tivoli StorageManager options file (dsm.opt) that is configured for the computer to be recovered.1. Start the computer with the bootable WinPE CD or DVD.2. From a command prompt, set environment variables DSM_DIR andDSM_CONFIG. Set DSM_CONFIG to the location of the Tivoli StorageManager client options file (dsm.opt). Set DSM_DIR to the location of the TivoliStorage Manager client on the bootable WinPE CD or DVD. For example:For x86 architecture:SET DSM_CONFIG=e:\dsm.optSET DSM_DIR="x:\PROGRAM files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient"For x64 architecture:SET DSM_CONFIG=e:\dsm.optSET DSM_DIR="x:\PROGRAM files 64\Tivoli\TSM\baclient"SET DSM_CONFIG=e:\dsm.optSET DSM_DIR="x:\TSM_ba_client_6.2.2\PROGRAM files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient"3. Restore the system state with the Tivoli Storage Manager client. For example, to restore the system state from a Tivoli Storage Manager serverthat is identified in the options file, issue a command like the following one:dsmc restore systemstateIn WinPE mode, the default is asrmode=yes. The backup copies on the Tivoli Storage Manager server require passwordauthentication. You can provide the password in several ways:a. Before issuing the restore systemstate command, import Tivoli StorageManager registry entries that you saved from the computer before it failed.Saving registry entries is an optional step in the task to create a TivoliStorage Manager client options file for ASR recovery.b. Provide the password in the dsm.opt options file with the password option.c. Enter the password when the client connects with the Tivoli StorageManager server. If you do not have the password, the Tivoli Storage Manager administrator canchange the password for your node.If you restore the system state from a backup set on a CD or DVD, issue acommand like the following one:dsmc restore backupset systemstate-backupsetname=c:\recovery\backupsetfile.name -loc=fileIn WinPE mode, the default is asrmode=yes. You can access the backup copies on the backup set without passwordauthentication. After the system state restore is completed, Tivoli StorageManager client creates and formats critical partitions for the computer. A criticalpartition is the partition that is critical for the operating system to function. Forexample, if the operating system is installed on the C: drive, then the partitioncontaining the C: drive is critical.Chapter 5. Restoring your data 175
