The method you use depends on the version ofTivoli Storage Manager client software you use <strong>and</strong> your VMware environment.File-level backupA file-level backup stores a copy of each file of a VMware guest.A file-level VM backup has the following advantages over a full-VMbackup:v You can use the file-level backup method to recover individual files,subdirectories, or entire drives.v You can configure the file-level backup to exclude files, folders, <strong>and</strong>entire drives.A file-level VM backup has the following disadvantages over a full-VMbackup:v It is not practical for recovering the system state files of a VMwareserver. System state files are included in the file-level backup but theyare not separated into the system state file spaces.v If any VMware environment is running a non-Microsoft Windowsoperating system, you cannot use a file-level VM backup.v You cannot recover the system drive using file-level backup.If you are using Tivoli Storage Manager version 6.2.0, or earlier, you mustuse the VCB tools to back up your VMware guests. You must install theVCB framework to back up <strong>and</strong> restore VMware files.Full VM backupThe full VM backup method copies the entire virtual machine, includingthe virtual disks <strong>and</strong> the virtual machine configuration file. The full VMbackup method is like the Tivoli Storage Manager image backup capability.A full VM backup has the following advantages over a file-level backup:v The full VM backup method can back up VMware guests that arerunning operating systems that are not Microsoft Windows.v It is easier to restore a VMware server from a full VM backup than afile-level backup.A full VM backup has the following disadvantages compared to a file-levelbackup:v The full VM backup-method requires more storage space on the TivoliStorage Manager server than a file-level backup because the entireVMware environment is saved for each backup.v The backup time for a full VM backup is longer than file-level backups.It might be difficult to back up your VMware environment in a singlebackup window if you have many VMware guests.v If you use the full VM backup method, you cannot exclude files fromthe backup.v You must restore an entire VM guest.There are multiple methods of running a full VMware backup:142 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Backup-Archive Clients: <strong>Installation</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>User's</strong> <strong>Guide</strong>
