3,510. Dawn Ma<strong>the</strong>son Larkspur, CA The dollars spent on children <strong>are</strong> such a good <strong>in</strong>vestment.<br />

The payback is often greater than 10 <strong>to</strong> 1 for <strong>the</strong> lifetime of<br />

<strong>the</strong> child. Interventions that <strong>are</strong> possible with children <strong>are</strong><br />

not always possible or as effective with adults and <strong>the</strong>se<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions help <strong>the</strong> children become more <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

adults who need less c<strong>are</strong>, have more fulfill<strong>in</strong>g lives and<br />

give back more <strong>to</strong> society as a whole. Why do we spend so<br />

many dollars on <strong>the</strong> last 5 years of a person's life and so<br />

little on <strong>the</strong> first 5? Maybe because children can't vote? <strong>We</strong><br />

have <strong>to</strong> vote for <strong>the</strong>m s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y <strong>are</strong>n't legally considered<br />

people until <strong>the</strong>y're 18 and we, as a society, <strong>are</strong><br />

responsible for <strong>the</strong>ir lack of status.<br />
