The operational flexibility of SINUS has enabled the introduction of automatic validation tools
for validating FCPs.
Up until SPOT5 (SPOT1-2-3-4 satellites), the BSSO was the sole simulator used for operational
validation. SINUS was used to validate the AOCS and payload fine programming loop.
For SPOT5, a decision was taken to use both simulators in a complementary capacity during the
satellite qualification phases (QT, QO).
This use of both simulators significantly reduced the duration of qualification phases.
5. Operability testing
Operability tests are executed with the same facilities as those used during satellite operations (the
main difference is that the satellite is replaced by a simulator, either SINUS or the BSSO) ;
operational modes are also reproduced :
• The simulator works in its real time mode and is connected to the ground control center (CCS).
• Operability tests aim at validating Flight Control Procedures together with the use of ground
control facilities (CCS) : TC are sent from CCS and TM parameters are displayed on CCS
mimics.
• With respect to SPOT/HELIOS satellites, procedure execution is manual : FCPs are read and
executed step by step by the operator. TC to be sent to the satellite simulator are selected
manually. Specified TM effects are checked also manually using TM mimics.
Operability testing is part of system testing. These tests involve a large team including experts in
the following fields : command/control, on-board software, ground-segment, simulator, quality
insurance …
