The ultimate objective pursued while developing a prototype GIS model and applying it in the case study
consists in proving the applicability of the proposed GIS-based approach for assessment of potential
forestry biomass supply for energy. Another objective was to explore possible applications of the GIS
model for far-reaching analyses aimed at the estimation of delivered cost and market prices of biomass
and assessment of the overall technological and economical potential of forestry biomass use for energy.
10.2 Methodology
The proposed GIS-based methodology for assessment of potential forestry biomass supply for energy
involves the following four main steps: (1) estimation of the amount of biomass resources available for
energy use; (2) evaluation of biomass “farm-gate” prices at each location; (3) calculation of marginal
prices of delivered biomass to specific locations and (4) identification of optimal locations of biomass
fuelled energy installations. The analyses corresponding to the first and the second steps of the
proposed methodological approach have been implemented within a case study of the canton of Vaud
as documented in section 8.3, while the third and the fourth steps are described herein only from a
theoretical point of view. A general overview of the methodology of the GIS model application is given
in Figure 46. The main technical details of the methodology are explained there under.
