10.2.1 Availability of biomass for energy use
In order to estimate the quantities of forestry biomass resources potentially available for energy use and
to represent them in GIS format, the following algorithm could be applied. First, the land surfaces
occupied by forests shall be identified within a given region. Then the forest stands supplying biomass
for commercial uses, including energy, should be determined. Next the actual in-stand volume of
biomass shall be calculated for each specific location. Finally the amount of biomass that could be
harvested annually shall be estimated and the proportion of harvestable amount of biomass which could
be used for energy shall be determined.
Land use/land cover analysis
The official land use/land cover statistics can be obtained from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (SFSO).
A geo-referenced database containing the data of Swiss land use statistics 1992/97 is readily available in
GIS format (see Figure 47) from the Service for Spatial Data in the Swiss Federal Administration (SFSO
2001).

These data are provided in the form of 100 x 100 m dot matrix superposed on aerial photographs. One
of 74 specific categories of land use/land cover is assigned to each sample data point (pixel
corresponding to 100 x 100 m surface). Ten specific categories are distinguished to designate the
surfaces occupied by forests or forest like vegetation (Table 45).
