Option 1b: Chipping inside the forest stand (felling/extraction with Harvester)
This technology option can also be used for chipping timber in-stand. It is applicable for
felling/extraction of trees of larger diameter (coniferous species: 15 cm < dbh < 40 cm; deciduous:
25 cm < dbh < 30 cm) in pure and mixed forests in all areas accessible for harvesting vehicles. The trees
are felled and extracted with Harvester machines, and if necessary they could be classified in
assortments. The Harvester puts the trees at the edge of its moving lane, where they are taken up by a
mobile chipper. The mobile chipper drives through the moving lane in a forest and chops the wood
blowing the chips into a tilting container. When the capacity of the tilting container is reached, the
mobile chipper drives to the road, where a larger roll-off container is located. Then this larger container
is transported by truck to the place of end-use consumption. The costs of wood chips supply using
Harvester/mobile chipper machinery are given in Table 50. The important difference compared to THE
Feller/Buncher technique consists in the fact that costs of felling/extraction of coniferous trees are
allocated to other assortments of timber (construction and industry wood), while for deciduous trees
these costs are taken into account.
138 *The cost of felling is allocated to other timber assortments.
