4.4 Operation of Regional Grids<br />
4.4.1 Northern Regional Grid<br />
The Northern Grid has an installed capacity<br />
of 42189 MW as on 31-03-2010 consisting of<br />
24851 MW <strong>thermal</strong>, 13,311 MW hydro, 1,620 MW<br />
nuclear and 2407 MW from renewable energy<br />
sources. The Northern Grid faced an energy<br />
shortage of 11.6% and a peaking shortage of<br />
15.4% during the year 2009-10 as compared to<br />
energy and peak shortages of 10.8% and 10.7%<br />
respectively during previous year (2008-09).<br />
Frequency of the grid remained 89.58 percent of<br />
time in the CERC recommended band of 49.2 to<br />
50.3Hz during the current year. Northern Region<br />
was the biggest importer of <strong>power</strong>, importing<br />
8938 MUs from Eastern Region, 2522 MU from<br />
Southern Region, 4684 MU from Western Region<br />
and 220 MU from North Eastern Region during<br />
the year 2009-10. Power was transferred from<br />
