Strand 2: Properties and Principles of Force and Motion
2. Forces affect motion
Major Objectives IS Suggested Activities Suggested Assessments
Concept A: Forces are classified as either
contact forces (pushes, pulls, friction,
buoyancy) or non-contact forces (gravity,
magnetism) that can be described in terms of
direction and magnitude
a. Identify ways (push, pull) to cause some
objects to move by touching them.
C10
a. Students will make a boat out of clay and show
how one can move it in a push or pull. Teachers
will play the “Pushes and Pulls” song on a CD.
Teachers will group students and have them
dramatize a verse. Students will role play being a
magnet, moving around the room and showing
what they are attracted to. (1.10; 1.5; 4.6)
a. Students will go to the playground and
show what pushes and what pulls.
b. Recognize that magnets cause some objects
to move without touching them.
C10
b. Using a magnet, students will pull materials that
stick to it without touching the materials. (1.2)
b. Using a strong magnet, students will
hold a few sheets of paper over
different materials. Students will
identify which materials move.
Strand 3: Characteristic and Interactions of Living Organisms
1. There is a fundamental unity underlying the diversity of all living organisms
Major Objectives IS Suggested Activities Suggested Assessments
Concept D: Plants and animals have different
structures that serve similar functions
necessary for the survival of the organism
a. Observe and compare the structures and
behaviors of different kinds of plants and
animals.
T
C8
a. Teachers will play CD Science Songs track 5.
Students will take a nature walk and observe
different types of plants. (1.4; 1.7; 1.8)
a. Students will make a poster comparing
similarities and differences of plants.
Make a living and non-living poster.
Students will draw pictures of people
as living things.
