Concept B: Properties of mixtures depend
upon the concentrations, properties and
interactions of particles
Scope and Sequence – Properties of and
Changes in Matter
a. Describe the properties of each
component in a mixture/solution and
their distinguishing properties (e.g. salt
water, oil and vinegar, pond water, Kool-
Aid).
R
a. Students will make mixtures like salt water
and blue food coloring and water. Students
will identify the solute and solvents. (.1, 1.2,
1.3, 1.8, 2.1, 2.2, 4.1, 4.3, 4.6, 4.7)
a. Students will classify solutes and solvents
and their relative properties in a variety of
mixtures and solutions.
b. Describe appropriate ways to separate
the components of different types of
mixtures (sorting, evaporation, filtration,
magnets, boiling, chromatography or
screening).
R
C1-12
b. Students will separate mixtures using
filters/screens, magnets, sorting areas,
chromatography paper, and
evaporation/boiling. (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.8, 2.1,
2.3, 4.1, 4.3, 4.6, 4.7)
b. Students will identify methods used to
separate different types of mixtures.
c. Predict how various solids
(soluble/insoluble) behave (e.g. dissolve,
settle, float) when mixed with water.
R
c. Students will observe various solids mixed
with water as they dissolve, settle, or float.
Students will draw and describe the result as
soluble or insoluble. (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.8, 2.1,
2.3, 4.1, 4.3, 4.6, 4.7)
c. Students will classify solids as soluble or
insoluble when mixed with water.
