Strand 1: Properties and Principles of Matter and Energy
1. Changes in the properties and states of matter provide evidence of the atomic theory
Major Objectives IS Suggested Activities Suggested Assessments
Concept A: Objects, and the materials
they are made of, have properties that
can be used to describe and classify them
a. Given an equal-arm balance and various
objects, illustrate arrangements in which
the beam is balanced.
C1
a. Demonstrate to children how to use a
balance. Provide blocks of different masses
and ask them to find blocks that are equal in
mass. Students will predict which items will
have the greatest mass, the least mass. (1.3)
a. Students will place a block on each side of the
balance so that the balance is equal. They will
draw a picture of what they see and draw
conclusions about why their predictions were
correct or not.
b. Measure and compare the mass of
objects (more/less ).
C3
b. Students will measure select blocks or other
objects that have different masses.
Demonstrate to children in advance how to
use a balance.
b. Students will place a block on each side of the
balance. They will draw a picture of what they
see. Students will compare which block has
more mass and which has less.
c. Order objects according to mass.
C1
C2
C3
c. Select several objects for children to observe.
Students will observe the objects and
compare their sizes, shapes and colors.
Students will classify the objects in three
ways. (1.8)
c. Students will draw a picture of the groups they
made.
