WMATA <strong>FY2017</strong> Capital Project Summary<br />

CIP0250 100% 8 Car Third Rail Upgrade and Replacement<br />

Project Description<br />

The 100% 8 car train program requires that all legacy<br />

contact rail (150 pound steel contact rail) be replaced with<br />

modern contact rail (84 pound aluminum and steel<br />

composite rail) which is twice as conductive as legacy<br />

contact rail. Track and Structures (TRST) replaces legacy<br />

contact rail with modern contact rail as a part of TRST's<br />

state of good repair (SOGR) program at a rate of five miles<br />

per year. TRST performs this task with force account labor.<br />

At the end of FY2015, 113 miles of legacy contact rail will<br />

require replacement prior to the completion of the 100% 8<br />

car train program. TRST will continue replacing contact rail<br />

at the rate of five miles per year. This program is required<br />

to replace contact rail that TRST cannot replace as a part of<br />
