Objetive
This study evaluated the effectiveness of building a plastiline 3D-model to promote understanding
of periventricular structures of the brain in a population of undergraduate
medical students.
Methods
Students were surveyed to collect data about their abilities and perceptions of the
topic, and the benefits of constructing a plastiline model. Students were given a video
with instructions for how to build the model, and were examined after the lecture to
assess their knowledge on the topic.
Results
The results show that there is a significant difference between genders in their self-perceived
ability to rotate structures mentally. However, scores in the knowledge quiz of
students that constructed the model, regardless of gender, was significantly higher than
those that learned the structures in the traditional way. The modeling activity reduced
the time spent studying the topic, and increased the understanding of spatial relationships
between structures in the brain.
Conclusion
Construction of 3D models is a valuable tool in the anatomy course, and other plastiline
models could be offered to promote deep learning of other topics in neuroanatomy.
