DOMESTIC SPACE AND COMMUNITY IDENTITY |97
from generalised multi-purpose storage practices to specialized
ones. Finally vessels for food preparation consisted overwhelmingly
of tripod cooking pots. While sherds from vessels for serving
food and drink (26%) exhibited a great variety of shapes although
one cannot determinate whether the different types were used for
different liquids or foods or whether they might suggest an elementary
social differentiation. 69
Chalasmenos presents the picture of a well-organised settlement
with a clear hierarchical organisation of its architecture. The
absence of later reoccupation, as well as the good preservation of
the architecture, makes this observation more reliable although this
is not a unique situation among Late Minoan IIIC settlements. Finally,
Chalasmenos equally presents a reason for stressing not only
the similarities between Late Minoan IIIC settlements but also their
significant differences. 70 Overall, it is an example of a different Late
Minoan IIIC settlement. The Late Geometric oikos, constructed
partially on top of the Late Minoan IIIC megaron was most probably
designed to house the “ritual” consumption of food and wine possibly
being used by a number of people coming from one or more
settlements in the vicinity. They gathered among the ruins of the
“final” Bronze Age site and built a structure on top of the largest
megaron in order to strengthen the perceived basis of their cultural
identity and their descent from earlier inhabitants in the region. 71
Katalymata
The settlement of Katalymata lies opposite Chalasmenos on a steplike
system of ledges overhanging the mouth of the Cha Gorge. 72
From the Isthmus one sees the deep and dramatic crevasse of the
Cha which separates the mountains of Papoura from the massif of
Lamia. From the lowlands nothing indicates the existence of built
terraces in the gorge as the rock terraces are only visible from
above or from the site of Chalasmenos, some 250–300 m to the
