solution has been found and except where house-models suggest
the current practice, no uniform solution can be accepted. 51

The relationship between the megaron-houses and the bench- houses
is exemplified by the complex formed by the lower megaron and
house A. Here, the main terrace was clearly designed to carry only
the megaron, with perhaps an outbuilding or yard behind. The
bench-house is an addition. J. Boardman suggested that benchhouses
are obviously much poorer dwellings than the megara and
that this difference in quality of construction may also mean that
they are later. 52 A. Mazarakis-Ainian has contradicted Boardman‟s
views, suggesting that the fact that bench-houses are more humble
constructions than the megara does not necessarily imply a chronological
distinction between the two types. Moreover, the fact that
house A is later than the lower megaron, does not necessarily imply
that all the bench-houses at Emporio are later. If it were so, one
would have to admit that initially the settlement consisted of only
three buildings: the megaron-hall, the lower megaron and house A. 53
