Fig. 4: Zagora, units around courtyard H21.
H19 seems to have been a one-room house with porch facing
south onto an open courtyard between units H29 and H23. At this
time, the largest original rooms constituted similar houses, probably
also with porches facing west. By Late Geometric II it appears
that both rooms H22 and H28 were parts of the house centred on
room H19, which now resumes its final and most substantial form.
It seems likely that in this late phase the door from H28 to H29
was blocked, but H29 itself possessed a door to the courtyard H21
which means that we can consider it part of the large house. Similarly
H22 was connected with H23 and H23 had access to the
courtyard.
The labyrinth of architectural sequence of the rooms surrounding
the big living room and its courtyard leaves us with the
following conclusion: In its final phase the big house was centred
around H19 and H21 and comprised rooms H28–H29 and H22–
H23. If H18 and H20 were rooms that could be entered through
courtyard H17, we may assume that some of the Zagora buildings
had windows, for otherwise light could only reach H20 from the
doorways.
