It still remains unclear what size and shape the acropolis took in the
two different phases. During the first occupational phase, the acropolis
was inhabited until at least the middle Late Helladic IIIC period.
When the second habitation phase occurs in Ag. Andreas, during
the eighth century, it seems that the site is no longer the main
centre of the island, as this role is taken up by the settlement in
Kastro which will eventually grow into the political and cultural
centre of Siphnos. 27 It is also interesting that during the Late Geometric
occupation, a good number of half-ruined buildings of the
Mycenaean phase (like building H) were left half-standing, thus
creating considerable space limitations for the addition of new
buildings during Late Geometric times. Although, most of these
buildings were abandoned by the end of the 8 th century BC the
acropolis was not entirely deserted since it is likely that the southwest
area was inhabited between Archaic and Hellenistic times.
Andros, Zagora
Zagora, is situated on the west coast of Andros, on a promontory
south of the saddle of Stavropeda. 28 The site is naturally fortified
by a sheer cliff and the only access is the northeast end (fig. 3). 29
Even today Zagora provides one of the few well researched and
sufficiently published Geometric settlements in the Cyclades. 30
Here I want to examine in particular two groups of houses in
the south part of the settlement: Group H21, H22, H28, H29, H23
centred around courtyard H19 as well as a second household consisting
of storerooms H26/H27 and units H42 and H43. 31 The
household grouped around room H19 (comprising rooms H19,
H21, H22, H28, H29 and H23) is definitely the most significant of
the settlement. 32 The focal point of this group is room H19, with
courtyard H21 in front of it (fig. 4). This courtyard was probably
half-roofed as shown by its ceramic assemblages (very worn sherds
