CYCLADES
Siphnos, Agios Andreas
DOMESTIC SPACE AND COMMUNITY IDENTITY |75
Only two substantial habitation sites survive at the end of the Late
Bronze Age on the island of Siphnos, in the western Cyclades. 18 Of
those, the site on the plateau of the hill of Ag. Andreas, situated in
a strategic position is of particular interest (fig. 1). 19 This is a fortified
acropolis protected by two walls, one strong internal constructed
first probably during Late Helladic IIIB, and the other a rather
weak external one, added slightly later at around Late Helladic
IIIC. 20 The initial phase of habitation dates to the 13 th century BC
and continued to be inhabited until the first half of the 12 th century
BC. After this it was abandoned and remained so until Late Geometric
times (second half of the 8 th century BC). During this period
new building complexes were added and they seem to have been
used until the end of the 8 th century BC. One of the most striking
elements of the architecture at Ag. Andreas is this interaction between
the Late Helladic IIIC and Late Geometric buildings.
