22.9 MANAGEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND<br />

SOCIAL ISSUES<br />

Creating Sustainable Corporate Values<br />

POWERGRID, being in the infrastructure sector, is in<br />

enviable position to directly contribute to the society. <strong>Power</strong>,<br />

today drives all the economic activities in the society.<br />

POWERGRID, as the provider <strong>of</strong> inter-state transmission<br />

facilities and as operator <strong>of</strong> the countrywide electrical grids,<br />

has a pivotal role in country’s power sector.<br />

The sustainability <strong>of</strong> corporate values is proven by the fact<br />

that they are in consonance with the values cherished by<br />

the society. The objectives <strong>of</strong> the company are in alignment<br />

with the requirements <strong>of</strong> its stakeholders. End results <strong>of</strong><br />

such value system are witnessed in all-round performance<br />

<strong>of</strong> the company, which has surpassed the targets. The<br />

company continues to make conscious efforts not only for<br />

sustaining such value-system but also inculcating desirable<br />

values.<br />

ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL MANAGEMENT<br />

POWERGRID has within the overall corporate ethics<br />

internalized the principles <strong>of</strong> sustainable development.<br />

Towards its commitment <strong>of</strong> a responsible corporate citizen<br />

POWERGRID has also been a forerunner in number <strong>of</strong><br />

areas. A corporate “Environmental and Social Policy &<br />

Procedures (ESPP)” has been developed and adopted in<br />

A view <strong>of</strong> 765 kV Compact Tower <strong>of</strong> Sipat - Seoni Transmission Line<br />

1998 to address the environment and social issues arising<br />

from its activities The policy outlines POWERGRID's<br />

approach and commitment to deal with environmental and<br />

social issues, relating to its transmission projects, and lays<br />

out management procedures and protocols to mitigate the<br />

same. Similarly the company towards it social responsibility<br />

missions ensure that it acts as socially responsible corporate<br />

entity with thrust on environment protection, community<br />

development, and energy conservation.<br />

POWERGRID believes that ESPP is a dynamic and living<br />

document, which has been upgraded conforming to the<br />

demands made by the continuously evolving social and<br />

environmental governance in the country and modified in<br />

the light <strong>of</strong> the experiences, gained with field implementation<br />

<strong>of</strong> POWRGRID projects. It is a special purpose vehicle to<br />

give a human face to the corporate functioning and moves<br />

away from a classical cost-benefit approach to the larger<br />

realm <strong>of</strong> corporate social responsibility, while mainstreaming<br />

and up scaling environmental and social concerns. ESPP<br />

is dedicated to the firm commitment <strong>of</strong> POWERGRID to<br />

paradigm <strong>of</strong> sustainable development and appropriate<br />

supporting processes.<br />

ESPP implementation in last 8 years has drawn many<br />

appreciations/awards from various stakeholders. Even The<br />

World Bank has awarded POWERGRID “Green Award’<br />

2006” on the commendable work done in the field <strong>of</strong>
