Central <strong>Power</strong> Research Institute (CPRI)<br />
An Autonomous Registered Society under the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Power</strong>, the Central <strong>Power</strong> Research Institute (CPRI) is in<br />
the service <strong>of</strong> the Nation, undertaking applied research in<br />
electric power engineering besides functioning as an<br />
independent Testing and Certification Authority for electrical<br />
equipment and components to ensure reliability and<br />
improve innovate and develop new products. The<br />
laboratories are located at Bangalore, Bhopal, Nagpur,<br />
Thiruvanthapuram, Hyderabad and Ghaziabad.<br />
New Test Facility Created<br />
The illumination Laboratory <strong>of</strong> Electrical Appliances<br />
Technology Division has set up a PC based Compact<br />
Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) endurance testing facility, which<br />
was recently commissioned and the testing work is in<br />
progress.<br />
Special tests conducted at laboratories <strong>of</strong> CPRI<br />
800kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), Type ‘A’<br />
(W:4) tower tested for the first time in the Country/<br />
World. The salient features <strong>of</strong> the tower are:<br />
Height:59m, Weight:43t & Cross arm:53m (end to end).<br />
<strong>Power</strong>grid Corporation <strong>of</strong> India Ltd. (PGCIL) was the<br />
customer.<br />
Condition monitoring tests on <strong>Power</strong> House &<br />
Switchyard equipments including Hydro Generators,<br />
Generator transformers, Current Transformers, Current<br />
Voltage Transformers, Potential Transformers, Lighting<br />
Arresters for Loktak <strong>Power</strong> Station, Manipur completed.<br />
Diagnostic tests on 220 kV substation equipment at<br />
Durgapur sub-station, West Bengal State Electricity<br />
Board (WBSEB).<br />
Site testing on 220kV, 1000 sq. mm Cross-limited<br />
Polyethylene (XLPE) cable <strong>of</strong> M/s. BRUGG Cables,<br />
Switzerland at Brigade Group site at K. R. Puram,<br />
Bangalore on 3 rd , 9 th & 27 th April 2007.<br />
HV test on 66kV cable for M/s. NICCO Corporation,<br />
K. R. Puram, Bangalore on 26 th April 2007.<br />
Humidity tests with application <strong>of</strong> 7 kV on a outdoor<br />
vacuum kiosk, 12kV 630 A for one <strong>of</strong> the circuit breaker<br />
for M/s. ABB, Nasik.<br />
Testing <strong>of</strong> Bus Bar Protection Relay was carried out<br />
for M/s. AREVA T&D Ltd., Chennai.<br />
Diagnostic tests at Site<br />
1) Diagnostic tests were carried out on Generators and<br />
Switchyard equipment at NHPC, Uri <strong>Power</strong> Station<br />
during 8 th to 20 th October 2007.<br />
CHAPTER - 22.12<br />
2) Recovery Voltage Measurement (RVM) tests were<br />
carried out on 400kV class Transformers at NTPC,<br />
Farakka, West Bengal during 4 th to 6 th October 2007.<br />
3) Diagnostic tests were carried out on Steam Turbine<br />
Generators, Generator Transformers, Auxiliary<br />
Transformers on 220kV class Current Transformers,<br />
Current Voltage Transformers (CVTs) & Las at M/s.<br />
GMR Energy Ltd., Mangalore during 29 th Oct to<br />
7 th Nov. 07.<br />
4) Diagnostic tests were carried out on 220kV class<br />
Current Transformers, CVTs at Durgapur Thermal<br />
<strong>Power</strong> Station (DTPS), DVC, Durgapur during 16 th to<br />
24 th Nov. 07.<br />
5) Diagnostic tests were carried out on 215 MV Hydro<br />
Generators and Switchyard equipments are in progress<br />
at Sutluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd., Jakhri, H.P.<br />
Condition Monitoring tests<br />
Condition Monitoring tests were carried out on Substation<br />
equipment at Rourkela Steel Plant, Rourkela, Orissa during<br />
20th Sept. to 14th Oct. 2007.<br />
Field Services & Special Consultancy rendered:<br />
A S<strong>of</strong>tware for design <strong>of</strong> Earth Mat for Extra High<br />
Voltage (EHV) Substations developed by CPRI was<br />
delivered to KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram as a<br />
technology transfer to KSEB. As part <strong>of</strong> this, three<br />
Engineers from KSEB underwent one day Exposure<br />
programme in the usage <strong>of</strong> the S<strong>of</strong>tware and also to<br />
understand the algorithm <strong>of</strong> Earth mat design based<br />
on relevant Indian and International Standards.<br />
Design checking/analysis <strong>of</strong> 50m triangular base<br />
microwave tower for M/s. Trylon TSF, Canada.<br />
The 400kV D/C tower, Type ‘SET70’ <strong>of</strong> Delta<br />
configuration with major features like 58 meter height,<br />
cross arm length <strong>of</strong> 43 metre end to end, with heavy<br />
magnitude <strong>of</strong> loads per conductor points like 54 tonne<br />
in transverse, 40 tonnes in vertical and 37 tonne in<br />
longitudinal, and stub load <strong>of</strong> 460 tonnes uplift was<br />
successfully tested on 14 th September 2007 for M/s.<br />
Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Chennai for their foreign customer<br />
Dubai Electricity & Water Authority.<br />
Carried out preliminary inspection <strong>of</strong> failure <strong>of</strong> 33kV<br />
cables and accessories during 11 th & 12 th September<br />
2007 at Heavy Water Plant, Department <strong>of</strong> Atomic<br />
Energy (Manuguru), Andhra Pradesh.<br />
