PUBLIC SECTOR UNDERTAKINGS<br />

1.0 The National Thermal <strong>Power</strong> Corporation Ltd., a<br />

Generating Company as defined under Section 2(4A) <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948, was incorporated in November,<br />

1975 with the mandate for planning, promoting and organizing<br />

integrated development <strong>of</strong> thermal power (including<br />

Associated Transmission Systems) in the country. The<br />

Company has acquired a new identity, “NTPC Limited” in<br />

November, 2005. This new identity signifies that the Company<br />

has diversified its operations beyond thermal power segment<br />

and has added new business activities by way <strong>of</strong> forward,<br />

backward and lateral integration, to be an integrated power<br />

company with presence across entire energy value chain.<br />

Today NTPC Ltd. is the leading power generating schedule<br />

‘A’ Navratna Company <strong>of</strong> Government <strong>of</strong> India with a<br />

diversified portfolio. NTPC Ltd. has a vision to become “A<br />

World class integrated power major, powering India’s<br />

growth, with increasing global presence”. The total<br />

approved investment <strong>of</strong> the Company as on 30.11.2007<br />

stands at Rs. 117183.78 crores.<br />

Presently, NTPC has to its credit coal based thermal power<br />

stations at 15 locations and gas/ liquid fuel based combined<br />

cycle power stations at 7 locations, this includes Badarpur<br />

(705 MW) in Delhi which has been taken over by NTPC w.e.f.<br />

1st June’2006 from GOI. The commissioned capacity <strong>of</strong> these<br />

NTPC owned stations is 26,850 MW. In addition to this, 1,794<br />

MW generation capacity has been acquired/ setup by NTPC<br />

under Joint Ventures at 4 locations. Thus total present<br />

installed generation capacity <strong>of</strong> NTPC is 28,644 MW as<br />

on 30.11.2007 (details enclosed at Annexure-I).<br />

2.0 NTPC PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS (as on<br />

30.11.2007)<br />

During the year 2007-08 up to 30.11.2007, a<br />

record generation <strong>of</strong> over 129631 Million Units<br />

was achieved, as against the last year’s<br />

generation <strong>of</strong> 119832 Million Units during the same<br />

period registering an increase <strong>of</strong> 8.18% over the<br />

previous year’s period.<br />

During the year 2007-08 (till November 2007),<br />

following TEN NTPC coal stations achieved more<br />

than 85% PLF : Dadri (Coal) (95.1%), Unchahar<br />

(94.9%), Korba (93.5%), Rihand (92.6%), Tanda<br />

(90.8%), Vindhyachal (90.7%), Talcher (Kaniha)<br />

(90.2%), Singrauli (89.8%), Kahalgaon (89.0%)<br />

and Ramagundam (86.2%).<br />

The company is at present implementing<br />

FIFTEEN power projects with a capacity <strong>of</strong><br />

13360 MW.<br />

CHAPTER - 22.1<br />

NTPC LIMITED<br />

During the year 2007-08 up to 30.11.2007, 1240<br />

MW has already been commissioned. This<br />

includes first 500 MW Unit <strong>of</strong> Sipat Stage-II<br />

commissioned in May 2007 and 740 MW Block-<br />

III <strong>of</strong> RGPPL revived under joint venture during<br />

June-October 2007.<br />

So far, NTPC has been allotted 8 coal blocks by<br />

Government <strong>of</strong> India including 1 coal block allotted<br />

during the year. These blocks include 2 coal blocks<br />

for development through a 50:50 Joint Venture<br />

between NTPC and Coal India Limited. Together<br />

these blocks are expected to produce about 47<br />

Million tonnes <strong>of</strong> coal per annum by 2017.<br />

During the year 2007-08, NVVN traded 2219.58<br />

MUs upto 30.11.07 and transacted business with<br />

24 State Utilities.<br />

Major awards and rankings received by NTPC<br />

during the year 2007-08 are :<br />

Golden Peacock Global Award for Excellence<br />

in Corporate Governance 2007 to NTPC by<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Directors.<br />

SCOPE Meritorious Award for Good Corporate<br />

Governance 2005-06.<br />

Six NTPC Stations received coveted CII-EXIM<br />

Excellence Award 2007. Simhadri Station<br />

received award for ‘Significant Achievement’, while<br />

other five received award for ‘Strong Commitment<br />

to Excel’.<br />

NTPC identified as the 2007 Platts Top 250<br />

Global Energy Company and ranked as no. 1<br />

Independent <strong>Power</strong> Producer in Asia.<br />

3.0 NTPC STATIONS & GENERATION PERFORMANCE<br />

(as on 30.11.2007)<br />

NTPC Stations: As on 30.11.2007, a total capacity <strong>of</strong> 28644<br />

MW is under operation at various NTPC stations. This<br />

comprises 35 units <strong>of</strong> 200/210 MW at Singrauli, Korba,<br />

Ramagundam, Farakka, Vindhyachal, Dadri, Unchahar,<br />

Kahalgaon, and Badarpur, 29 units <strong>of</strong> 500 MW at Singrauli,<br />

Korba, Ramagundam, Farakka, Vindhaychal, Rihand,<br />

Kahalgaon, Talcher-Kaniha Simhadri and Sipat, 6 units <strong>of</strong><br />

110 MW at Tanda and Talcher, 4 units <strong>of</strong> 60 MW at Talcher, 3<br />

units <strong>of</strong> 95 MW at Badarpur and 22 Gas Turbines and 10<br />

Steam Turbines at Anta, Auraiya, Kawas, Dadri, Jhanor<br />

Gandhar, Kayamkulam and Faridabad combined cycle power<br />

plants and 314 MW (4x60+2x30+1x14 MW) Captive <strong>Power</strong><br />
