Excavation consists of the removal of material encountered to subgrade elevations andthe reuse or disposal of materials removed.B. Subgrade: The uppermost surface of an excavation or the top surface of a fill or backfillimmediately below subbase, drainage fill, or topsoil materials.C. Borrow: Soil material obtained offsite when sufficient approved soil material is notavailable from excavations.D. Subbase Course: The layer placed between the subgrade and base course in a pavingsystem or the layer placed between the subgrade and surface of a pavement or walk.E. Base Course: The layer placed between the subbase and surface pavement in a pavingsystem.F. Unauthorized excavation consists of removing materials beyond indicated subgradeelevations or dimensions without direction by the Engineer. Unauthorized excavation, aswell as remedial work directed by the Engineer, shall be at the Contractor's expense.G. Structures: Buildings, footings, foundations, retaining walls, slabs, tanks, curbs,mechanical and electrical appurtenances, or other manmade stationary featuresconstructed above or below ground surface.H. Utilities include onsite underground pipes, conduits, ducts, and cables.1.4 SUBMITTALSA. General: Submit the following according to the Conditions of the Contract and Division1 Specification Sections.B. Product data for the following:1. Each type of plastic warning tape.2. Filter FabricC. Test Reports: In addition to test reports required under field quality control, submit thefollowing:1. Laboratory analysis of each soil material proposed for fill and backfill from onsiteand borrow sources.2. One optimum moisturemaximum density curve for each soil material.3. Codes and Standards: Perform earthwork complying with requirements of authoritieshaving jurisdiction.B. Testing and Inspection Service: Employ a qualified independent geotechnicalengineering testing agency to classify proposed onsite and borrow soils to verify thatsoils comply with specified requirements and to perform required field and laboratorytesting.1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONSA. Existing Utilities: Do not interrupt existing utilities serving facilities occupied by theOwner or others except when permitted in writing by the Owner and then only afteracceptable temporary utility services have been provided.1. Provide a minimum of 48 hours notice to the Engineer and receive written notice toproceed before interrupting any utility.B. Demolish and completely remove from site existing underground utilities indicated to beremoved. Coordinate with utility companies to shutoff services if lines are active.PART 2PRODUCTS2.1 SOIL MATERIALSA. General: Provide approved borrow soil materials from offsite when sufficient approvedsoil materials are not available from excavations.B. All soils shall be free of loam, debris, waste, frozen materials, vegetation and otherdeleterious matter.C. Sand for Cushion, Backfill, and pipe bedding shall consist of material reasonably freefrom silt, loam, clay, organic matter.
